A Seafarer
United Kingdom
06 Feb 2025
Built in 1998, this vessel has served Fisheries and scientific research projects well, and continues to do so. For its time, the vessel was cutting edge with all the bells and whistles needed for delivering projects and requirements set out by the Scottish Government and other environmental agencies. 20+ Years have passed, and much of the equipment and gear on board is overdue a replacement. Bits and pieces of modernisation are continually ongoing with the vessel, however fall short on some occasions. The vessel is robust and can withstand whatever the North Sea and Eastern North Atlantic can throw at her nontheless. On board facilities are a mix of old and new. A sizable common TV room, library and smoking-room. A communal messroom likened to that of many offshore vessels nowadays. There is no dedicated on board gym, instead opting for a variety of spaces dotted around the vessel for exercise equipment- mainly a rowing machine and some freeweights (if they're not being used for door-stops). There is a dedicated section for "wet lab" work- and a container deck store which offers "dry lab" work- catering for ROV/Mud Grab/Camera sledge works and projects. Food on board is only as good as the galley team- hit and miss. Nothing spectacular or special however they do their best to keep the menu varied, different, pallateble and nutritious. Typically a breakfast service, lunch and dinner service. On board WiFi is slow and can barely work in cabins. Cannot sustain brief video or audio calls. The vessel suffers from years of age, so may appear dirty/dingy but is kept well maintained. Cabins are dated in their design with carpet and raised bunks however this was the style at time of design!
